Thumb pianos, also known as a Mbira or Kalimba, are one of the most unique African musical instruments and are  central to African music. (“Kalimba” translates to “little music”). No need for any musical background, Pianos Recycled’s kalimbas can be played by any age group at any level. To play simply hold the instrument between the palms, then use your thumbs to pluck the keys. Our Kalimbas have the notes engraved into the instrument & all come with a tuning hammer, note stickers and downloadable guides on how to tune and play!
 
Pianos Recycled has two types (and a few styles):
 
1. an 8-key mini kalimba for smaller people or those that want a smaller size instrument with which to enjoy music making. The standard tuning for a kalimba is C Major 8-KEY MINI KALIMBAS This is an excellent, inexpensive instrument that can play many simple songs. In addition, the 8-key kalimba is light and small, which can easily fit into your pocket and be taken anywhere, making it the perfect travel companion.
 
2. or a larger 17-key acoustic kalimba with or without an electric pickup. 17-KEY KALIMBAS The 17-key is a great instrument for both beginners and experienced players looking for a portable and expressive musical tool. We have 2 versions: acoustic only or acoustic with electric pickup so you can play through your amp. Made using piano hardwoods, tonewoods and piano soundboard spruce
